ALL SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO APPROPRIATE AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING.

Irrespective of ones circumstances, it is critical, indeed a human right that one has access to housing appropriate to ones circumstances at any particular time.

Although federally funded, where possible it is envisaged that community and participants will be instrumental in the development and design of housing.

Imagine will increase and maintain a stock of affordable public housing, means tested basic rental will not exceed 25% of one’s gross income.

There is also a requirement for permanent supportive housing. This housing, depending on individual circumstance may include (but not restricted to) other services such as training, medical, catering, transport and high-care. These means tested additional services will not be free, however like basic rental will be charged as a percentage of gross income.

Federally funded housing and associated services will be, where possible, be developed in conjunction with local communities and participants.

Housing has a ripple effect on life, energy consumption, other resources, individual’s health and community interaction.

Below are three videos that explore different and innovative approaches to housing.

This video represents a purpose designed building built by a non-profit.

The building integrates services for residents that are transitioning from homelessness. This type of home could be permanent if the resident so chose.

There is no financial impediment to the Federal Government funding the building this style of public housing, in conjunction with communities.

Co-housing communities are an option that would appeal to some as a public housing option.

This option has a range of ages from children to the elderly. With appropriate federal funding and support, this option potentially could allow the elderly to age with relative safety in their own homes. Individuals with disabilities could also be integrated into this style of housing, again with appropriate federal funding and support.

Again there is no financial impediment to the Federal Government funding the building of this style of public housing in conjunction with communities.

This is an example of an architecturally designed apartment development in Melbourne that has affordability and sustainability front and center.

Outcomes can be encouraged by housing design.

There is no reason that this approach to housing can be integrated into public housing.
